Symmetrical degeneration of the neostriatum in Chinese infants.

چکیده
In 1934 I described (Verhaart, 1934) three rare cases of cerebral degeneration in Chinese infants, two of them showing extensive symmetrical degeneration in the caudate nucleus and the putamen with formation of large neuroglial nuclei, resembling Alzheimer's cells, while the other case showed the same affection in several parts of the cerebral cortex. For this reason the three cases were compared with the hepato-cerebral degeneration of Kinnier-Wilson and Strumpell-Westphall. It is not certain that these three cases belong to the same type of affection, as there are important differences between them and similar cases in families belonging to the Wilson-pseudosclerosis group, which have not yet been described in Europe. But now I have examined three other cases resembling greatly the second one formerly recorded, and the resemblance is so important that I feel justified in bringing them into one group and in supposing that they have the same etiology.

Background: Worldwide Intra-Uterine Growth Restriction carries out high rate of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Perinatal mortality rates are 4-8 times higher for growth-retarded infants. IUGR are subdivided into symmetrical and asymmetrical subtypes. Aim of Study: To focus on the actual incidence of each subtype of IUGR and disparities. Methods: Across-sectional descriptive study a...

Abstract Background Limb gangrene in neonates is an extremely rare clinical problem and very few cases have been recorded up to now. However, a variety of etiological causes may account for this condition. Case Presentatio...
متن کاملEffects of Vitamin B12 in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis. Animal protein is the major dietary source of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to megaloblastic anemia, degeneration of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and abnormalities of epithelial tissues. Two factors are necessary for the cure of megaloblastic anemia: one in food (extrinsic factor) and one i...
متن کاملA type of aspiny neuron in the rat neostriatum accumulates [3H]gamma-aminobutyric acid: combination of Golgi-staining, autoradiography, and electron microscopy.
Light microscopic autoradiography was used to identify cells in the neostriatum that became labelled after the local injection of [3H]gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA). The GABA-accumulating cells comprised up to 15% of the total population of neurons. Thirty-seven of these cells were examined in the electron microscope and it was found that they all had similar cytological characteristics, i.e., prom...
